How the Clinic Works

We are passionate about patient-centered health care! You and your family will have a lead physician or a nurse practitioner who will be your primary care giver. However, for urgent medical concerns requiring a same or next day appointment, you are welcome to see another doctor or NP. We also have nurses, clinical counselors, and other health care professionals providing care at South Hill.

We are generally open Monday - Friday, 9am-5pm. We also offer Saturday clinics at least once a month; the schedules vary. We work hard to offer same day appointments for urgent health concerns. Email us or book an appointment online.

We are proud to be a teaching site for Family Medicine residents, Nurse Practitioner and Midwifery students. Occasionally you will see a kind and competent learner during your visit, and we thank you in advance for seeing them.

South Hill Health Centre emphasizes patient empowerment, education, and choice. We also understand that health is more than the absence of illness and offer workshops in mindfulness, postpartum anxiety & depression, baby care basics, and the Circle of Security Parenting program. You can sign up for these events here.

Services & Policies

Danielle Schroeder Registered Clinical Counsellor, MA, RCC

I have been a registered clinical counsellor since 2008. For the first ten years of my career I worked primarily with the Callanish Society, counselling patients through trauma, cancer, end of life, and grief. I’ve also counselled a broad range of individuals, couples, and families in private practice.

More recently, my own experience of childbirth and transitioning to parenthood sparked my desire to support families going through this roller coaster stage of life. I am delighted to be joining the team at South Community Birth Program. Together, we offer a safe and supportive space for expecting mothers, their partners, and new parents to explore the myriad emotions that accompany this profound experience. I look forward to working with you and learning from one another.

Dr Justine Spencer and Dr Fiona Petigara provide comprehensive prenatal, labour & birth and newborn care at South Hill clinic. They are members of the Family Practice Maternity Service (FPMS) at BC Women's hospital (www.birthdocs.ca).

If you are their patient they will take of your entire maternity care needs, including the care of your newborn baby following the birth. If you are a patient of one of the other doctors or nurse practitioners at South Hill, they are happy to take care of you throughout your pregnancy and birth and your primary care provider will resume care of you and your baby after the birth. Ask you primary provider for a referral to us!

If you are not a patient at South Hill you are welcome to register with us for maternity care at   www.birthdocs.ca.

We offer a full review of your health history and current issues, including cancer and chronic disease screening tests, and advice about lifestyle changes and prevention. These visits often include a full physical exam, however, not every patient needs to have a complete physical. Our Medical Services Plan in BC does not fund complete physicals for everyone. The doctor will review this with you at your appointment.

If you require a prescription refill, referral to a specialist or if you want to discuss your test results, you need to make an appointment. If you require an emergency prescription refill and can’t make an appointment time, we will provide a short term refill for a fee of $30. If you have misplaced your prescription and require another copy, we charge $12.50 for a replacement.

Non-urgent test results will not be discussed by phone. The doctors and nurse practitioner are very busy during clinic days and are not available to take phone calls. If you have a concern that is non-urgent and you cannot come in to clinic, consider calling the nurses line at 8-1-1.

We offer therapeutic joint injections for select conditions. These require a consultation with a physician before you book.

We can do simple biopsies and removals of certain skin lesions. You need to have a consultation with the doctor before booking this appointment. There are occasionally fees associated with these procedures.

Contraceptive implants (brand name Nexplanon) may be inserted and removed at our clinic.  Not all providers offer this service but if your provider does not, you can see a different provider who does.

We offer IUD insertions and have a fairly high volume of these at our clinic. You need to discuss this with a doctor or NP prior to your insertion, and need to have a prescription so you can bring your IUD to your appointment with you.

We offer routine pap test screening according to the guidelines set out by the BC Cancer agency.

We offer routine infant check ups and vaccinations, up until the 18 month vaccines. We ask you to book your child’s 4-6 year boosters with public health or through the school. We can also do vaccines and boosters for older children, adolescents and adults, but you should check with us to be sure we have the vaccine that you need. Some vaccines do need to be paid for, if they are not covered by public health. For travel advice and vaccines we encourage you to visit your local travel clinic. We hold yearly flu shot clinics.

We offer same day booking for urgent issues. Your doctor or NP holds spots every day for urgent concerns. However, if your primary care provider is not available, you are welcome to see another doctor or NP. Please try to book with us before going to a walk in clinic. We cannot guarantee that we can see you, but we try very hard to take care of you! These are 10 min appointments and the doctor will only be addressing the urgent concern.
